New year, new selection of movie releases from Disney to enjoy. Yes, if you didn't already know, we are big fans of Disney movies including Marvel Studios. Last year Disney kind of knocked it out of the park with so many great releases like Endgame, Toy Story 4, and we finally got a follow up to Maleficent. This year, I have five movies that I've been amped to watch since I saw the trailers last year and am looking forward to seeing each of them.

Easter is right around the corner. And if you're like me, you're probably DIYing your kids' Easter basket. Growing up my mom loved putting together baskets that were specific to me and my siblings instead of purchasing the pre-made baskets. She always made sure to incorporate things that we each loved. For example, she'd always get me a new piece of heart-shaped jewelry and book because I loved hearts and reading.
Now that I'm a mom, I'm continuing the Easter tradition that she started. JJ is still debating on whether he wants a Thomas & Friends themed basket or Lightning McQueen. We're still counting down the days until Disney·Pixar's Cars 3 hits theaters nationwide. Trust me when I say the Cars fever is real in the YUMMommy household. Thankfully, the kids (and I) got to attend the Cars 3 Road to the Races Tour stop this past weekend with lots of other Disney fans. Disney·Pixar's Cars 3 rolls into theaters nationwide on June 16, 2017. It's been all JJ and Moo have talked about since they saw the first teaser trailer months ago. The kids aren't the only ones excited though. I'm a Cars fan as well and can't wait to see what's going to happen to our fave Lightning McQueen and his racing career not that he's no longer a spring chicken. When I was a kid, Easter was one of my favorite holidays because it meant homemade/DIY Easter baskets from my mom. She had five kids and made sure to customize the fillers of each basket to match our likes and interests. While Jay prefers to purchase premade Easter baskets for the kids, I enjoy carrying on my mom's tradition of customizing small baskets for Moo and JJ filled with goodies I know they will love. Snow White might have been the first book that I learned how to read on my own, but Belle was the first Disney princess that I fell in love with. Somehow she felt different from the other princesses before her. She was the first Disney princess that I saw bits of myself in. Her love for books and her father knows no bounds. My family can you tell that I love doesn't even begin to describe the appreciation I have for the written word and it goes without saying that I love my family fiercely,

Dubbed the "ultimate anti-princess movie" by Time Magazine, the kids and I have been waiting for what feels like forever for Disney's Moana to hit theaters. Well, our wait is finally over because Moana is finally here! Now usually have a rule about not having family movie nights (outside of the house) on school nights. However when we got invited to attend an early screening right here in Charlotte, I knew that I couldn't pass this opportunity up.
Why all of the hype and excitement?
Diversity matters. No this is NOT up for debate. While Moana is Polynesian, she's still a brown girl/girl of color. As a multiracial woman and mom of color raising children of color, I will ALWAYS be here for supporting inspiring movies and stories about main characters of color. This movie is not only a win for Polynesians but brown people everywhere! The first thing Moo pointed out about Moana when she saw the first colored illustrations of Moana, was that Moana had light skin like her and curly/wavy hair.
Our children need to see the diversity of our world represented in movies, television shows, books and other forms of media. Because again, diversity matters. Also, this type of diversity opens up the door for us to talk about, research and experience different cultures. And I'm firmer believer that more we open ourselves and our families up to those who are different from us, the better we can fight ignorance when it comes race and ethnicity.
Not a damsel in distress + life lessons
While Moana is considered a "Disney Princess" Moana herself sets the record straight. She and Maui, a demigod, are sailing across the open sea when he makes the mistake of referring to her as princess in a way that hints that she's a damsel in distress. "I'm not a princess," she fires back. While there's nothing wrong with being a princess, I felt like this scene was so powerful young girls. Watching it I wanted scream "You go girl. Let him know!"
She's daughter of Chief Tui and future chieftess of Motonui. She's strong, brave, smart, head strong and determined. She is NOT a damsel in distress. She does NOT need Prince Charming to sail up on his shiny white boat to save her. In fact, it's just the opposite. Moana actually the one who tries to do the saving as she heads out beyond the reef to search for Maui to help save her people and their island.
And as much as I love a great romance, I was so glad that there were no romantic elements in this movie as far as the main characters were considered. For a while I was concerned that they were going to have her ending up in love with the demigod. This is NOT a spoiler as Disney and the stars of the movie have already revealed and made it clear that Moana is not the typical princess movie and there will be no smooching going on.
Secondly, I appreciated that Moana was so much more than a story of a 16-year old trying to save her people. It was about teaching us how to go beyond the reef. Casting aside our fear and safety nets to go outside of our comfort zones. This was story about the importance of passing down the history our ancestors to our children and encouraging them to do the same with their children.
Maui taught us that even the strongest warrior can be crippled fear/doubt. However, it's up to us to defeat that fear or that doubt so that we can rise up to our full potential. Also, Maui taught us that it's important to remain humble and not sacrifice our integrity trying to be people pleasers.
Culturally stimulating and rich
I'm going to be honest and admit that Moana was everything that I had hoped Princess Tiana would be. Don't get me wrong, The Princess and the Frog will always be in my Top 3 when it comes to Disney Princess movies. But . . . I really wished Disney had made Tiana a true African princess, left Prince Naveen where he was at and delved more into the richness and uniqueness of African cultures.
Like mentioned earlier diversity matters, but so representation. While we're not Polynesian, we did feel immersed in the Polynesian culture. From the music, to the dancing and mythology, everything felt so rich and authentic. We truly loved getting an inside look at what their culture looks like. It's so much more than hula dancers and floral necklaces.
Just learning that Maui the island was named after Maui the demigod was educational for me. Since watching the movie, I've actually been googling Polynesian culture and mythology to learn more. At the end of the day seeing Moana gives me hope that Disney will go to the drawing board in future give us another African princess movie that will really delve into the richness of African cultures.
Great cast
Dewayne Johnson aka The Rock is like a Disney pro by now. Prior to this movie, he's worked with Disney twice - The Game Plan and Race to Witch Mountain. Couple that with that fact that he's Polynesian and was born and raised in Hawaii, he was the perfect choice and fit for Maui. And when I say you guys are going to be pleasantly surprised by his singing chops, I mean it. Like he's been holding out on us.
We knew he had acting chops, but who knew he had such jazzy and smooth baritone?! I would love to see him do another animated film with singing or even take a stab at Broadway.
Did you guys know that Auli'i Cravalho, also Polynesian, was 14 years old when she started recording the vocals for her role as Moana?! She turned 16 today! Happy Birthday Auli'i! She truly nailed Moana. I've heard so many seasoned adult actors talk about how much harder it is to narrate an animated movie than it is to do a live action movie.
Why? Well, because in a live action movie, there's a set, other actors, costumes, makeup and the whole shabang to help them get into their role. When you're narrating or voicing over animation it's often times just the actor in a box watching the characters on the screen. There are no props, wardrobe or set to help your mind slip into character easily. I truly admire Auli'i for being able to master this at the age of 14. I mean she delivers her lines like a pro and her singing voice is amazing.
Overall Moana was and is an amazing movie. We laughed, we (mainly I) cried. The kids were mesmerized from the start to the finish. We all left feeling inspired, motivated, empowered and most of all proud. Disney knocked it out of the park with this. Moana hits theaters on November 23rd and we encourage you purchase tickets for your family to see it.

Does your family love Disney? Planning a trip a Disney theme park? Why not celebrate and show off your Disney Side by hosting a party?!! We did! This past weekend we took a break from planning our first trip to Disney World to unwind, let our hair down and party. And today, I'm sharing 4 elements that you can use to make sure your own Disney Side party is pure perfection.
Decor
You can't have a Disney Side party without Disney themed decorations. Our party was Mickey Mouse Clubhouse themed, which is perfect if you have a girl and a boy like me. And you don't have to go all out. We kept our decorations simple using themed a tablecloth, cupcake/treat holder, plates, cups and napkins. From the ceiling we hung Mickey Mouse foil swirlers.
We didn't have to go all out with balloons and streamers. Simple was definitely more for us. While our kit was provided by Disney, you can pick up the items used from Walmart or a local party supply store like Party City. I checked and both definitely carry the tablecloth, cups, plates and napkins. And the prices are very reasonable. None of our decorations are over $6.
Entertainment
What's a party without entertainment? You don't want to let your guests get bored. It's a celebration, remember? For our party we had games, dancing and movies. You can find card games like Snaps and Go Fish that are Disney themed. I'd check the Dollar Tree and Walmart for the ones in my area carry them. Also, don't forget to check the official Disney Store if you have one in your area.
We have satellite radio and streamed Radio Disney for tunes to dance to. You can also check out official Disney playlists on Spotify or check out the Disney Music VEVO channel on YouTube for free tunes. For movies, you could always see if your cable company offers Disney OnDemand and let's not forget Redbox. For a $1 each you can rent one or two of your family's favorite movies like Frozen or The Princess and the Frog.
Again, you don't have to spend a ton on entertainment. Just make sure that whatever games, movies and music you choose it's age appropriate for the majority of your younger guests.
Favors
I was always raised that you don't throw a party without giving guests some sort of favor or take home gift. For our party favors we created mini treat baskets. We put in Mickey Mouse temporary tattoos, stickers, and pencils. You make each basket gender specific by adding additional things like nail polish for girls (like the ones below) and cars for boys.
Again no need to break the bank on favors. Walmart and the Dollar tree are my friends and will be yours too! Keep favors simple and age appropriate.
Food
If you're planning on inviting outside family and friends be sure to get a list of everyone's food allergies. Luckily for us, my kiddies are the only ones with food allergies. So, it was easy for me to tailor our menu to their needs. Again we kept it simple with fries and homemade chicken nuggets.
Also when you're planning your menu make sure that you have more finger foods than foods that require utensils. Finger foods are a lot more kid friendly and will often times be less expensive. Don't forget about dessert! Whether it's fruit or cupcakes be sure to treat your guest a sweet treat.
So, what are you waiting for? Now that you know what you need to throw your own Disney Side celebration, get to planning. Remember, we don't need wait for special occasions to celebrate the simple joys in life. Seize the moment and make the memories!

I was in junior high when we first got satellite television. Up until that point, my television sessions were non-existent with the exception of Disney movies. My mom was and still is a die hard Disney fan. The Lion King is her all-time favorite Disney movie. She even got a chance to catch the musical at Disney World one year when she chaperoned my baby brother's band trip.
So, it was no shocker that when we got our satellite we were only allowed to watch three things: the Disney Channel, the news and Oprah! For the most part we stuck to this rule; occasionally we watched things that we weren't supposed to because our peers were watching it, but not often. I remember falling in love with shows like The Famous Jett Jackson (RIP to Lee Thompson Young), Lizzie Mcguire, and being introduced to a mischievous and bothersome Shia LaBeouf, who played the role of Louis Stevens on Even Stevens. He's definitely come into his looks since then, but I digress.
I remember enjoying cartoons like PB & J Otter, JoJo's Circus and more with my baby sister who was just starting elementary school. No longer feeling like we were missing out on all of the IT tv shows for teens made me feel like I was finally part of the In crowd. My mom was a single parent and so cable and satellite tv were out of her budget for a while, but we definitely appreciated her getting it for us once we could afford it. Whenever Disney would advertise casting calls, she would always encourage me or one of my siblings to try out, but we were too shy and unsure of our talents back then.
Here I am years later with two kids of my own and I'm proud to say they both love Disney just as much if not more than my siblings and I do and did when we were their ages. I'm honored to have seen and celebrate the creation of the first African American Disney Princess, Princess Tiana from The Princess & the Frog. I'm even more excited that I have my first opportunity to partner with Disney via Disney Parks and MomSelect by hosting a Disney Side @Home Celebration! Moo's eyes about popped out of her head when I told her we had a package from Disney coming.
Looking back, I'm kind of wishing I had waited until it arrived to tell her. Okay not really, but she asked about it EVERYDAY. The first words out of her mouth in the mornings would be, "Is my Disney package coming today?" When I picked her up from school she would ask, "Did the Disney package come?" And during our nightly family prayer when I'd ask if she had anything she wanted to pray for she would respond with , "Lord, help our Disney package hurry up and get here." LOL.
Seeing her excitement and joy over us getting the chance to do something special like a Disney Side @Home Celebration has been refreshing and magical for me. I can only imagine this is the same excitement I exuded to my mom when I was younger and got excited about receiving or getting to watch the latest Disney movie. I had the biggest obsession with Pocahontas and went nuts when my mom was able to get my the braiding Pocahontas doll for Christmas after the movie came out. I cherished that doll and played with it for years until my little brother chewed one of her hands off and then broke off her head.

Do I even have to tell y'all what Moo's favorites from our kit are? I think the picture above says it all. She's in love with Nuzzles and Matey. I haven't let her crack into the nail polish yet since we're saving that to do our nails with the day of our party. JJ's favorites have been the stickers, pencils and huge Pin-the-Smile-on-the-Mickey cutout.
My favorite is the cake mold because I can use it for parties for years to come. And I'm ready to try out the Duff's Tie Dye cake mix. I heard it tastes really good. The Mr and I will enjoy that since it's not gluten-free. We've decided to host our party next month and have decided on a Family Togetherness Day theme filled with family, food, games, Disney movies and of course talking about our upcoming Disney World trip.

So, we are still in the potty training trenches with JJ. Since my last post (see here), our lovely friends from The First Years™ sent JJ a potty. And it wasn't just any plain, average Joe potty either. They sent him the CARS Racing Mission Potty System™. It can be used as a potty pot, trainer seat and step stool and makes car sounds.
Of course, when JJ saw his potty for the first time, it was love at first sight. It took him ten minutes before he would even let go long enough for me to take it out of the box. Assembly was pretty quick and easy. All I had to do was install the sound button and snap on the lid. Can't get any easier than that.
After that he was back to not letting anyone touch it. Finally, after about 30 minutes, I thought that it would be a good idea to go ahead and try the potty out. So, we get everything unsnapped, pulled down and I go to sit him on the potty and he flips out! As it turns out, he loves his CARS potty and Lighting McQueen so much that he didn't want to sit on it.
This last week, I've been making sure to tell him everyday that starting this coming Friday, we're going to be using the trainer seat and then use the base as a step stool and place he can rest his feet since the trainer seat is made to fit on the toilet. Hopefully, this will go over better as we had made some progress previously with him being comfortable with that method.
But man, does he cart Lighting around the apartment almost all the day. He loves that he can stand on it and get into more things like turning on the water and almost flooding the bathroom sink, reaching the snack shelf in the pantry and he even attempted to stir one of my pots on the stove. Thank goodness I have quick reflexes. Needless to say, I have made it clear that Lighting McQueen is not allowed anywhere near the kitchen.
And JJ isn't the only one impressed with his new potty system. Since it arrived while the Mr was at work, the first words out his mouth the next morning where, "You got him a car potty with wheels?!" Then he shot me the you're-spoiling-him look. I had to quickly explain that the potty was a gift first off and secondly, having an aesthetically pleasing potty does not make a child spoiled, but instead might encourage them to actually use it.
Moo was a little upset at first. She felt like JJ has been getting lots of stuff lately while she hasn't been getting anything. I had to explain that JJ just had a birthday and that I had been telling her that he was getting a special potty soon. She calmed down when I told her that she could play with the sound button and use it as a step stool. Kids! So, folks, fingers crossed we will have success on Friday using the trainer seat.

Can't believe I haven't done one of these since last year!! I probably have a list a mile long of things that have left me saying "Hmmm..." I'm going to try to keep it short and sweet though.
1-No Sleep Campaign: Forget 'No New Friends.' Drake should have made a song called 'No Sleep Friends' because that is exactly what's been going on around these parts. Moo and JJ have officially launched a No Sleep campaign against me. Moo is beyond the napping stage and I've cut out JJ taking naps in the evenings. However, when it's time to go to bed neither are tired.
And when I do finally get them to go to sleep, one of them wakes up a hour or two later. Then, of course the other one senses that we are up and decides to get up too. Now I will say that Moo is good about falling back to sleep once she sees that it's still too early to be up. Y'all if you didn't know, I'm about my sleep! For real, I don't do well when I'm running on E. Pray for me that these kiddies will get it together.
2-Ghost Neighbors: So, it seems like the apartment next to us has officially been leased out. The problem is that I have yet to see my neighbors. I mean I hear them over because they are LOUD! But for some reason, they don't use the front door. And I don't use our back door. I've caught a glimpse of what I thought was his lady friend and thought she lived there with him, but I was mistaken because I haven't seen the mystery woman since that one day.
And speaking of my ghost neighbor(s), they tried to jack us for our trash and recycling cans! No boo. You just moved in and you already done tried it. There is no free trash collection here in the Queen City. We're paying almost $20 a month for the city to empty those cans. And they had the nerve to chuck their beer bottles and stuff in my trash can. Like first off, glass and aluminium go in the recycling can. Secondly, you can't put anything in my trash can without asking. Let's hope this doesn't become a repeat habit.
3-Finding Jesus: Did y'all see the season finale of Kris Jenner's talk show? I almost missed it too because one I didn't even know I could catch her show. And two, I thought it hadn't even premiered yet. I was way off. Anyways, Kanye West was her guest and of course he debuted a picture of North. She's a cutie.
But then he said that becoming a father made him want to "do more of God's work." Now, I'm not sure how these celebrities define doing God's work, but I do know that some of them should start by finding Jesus first! Kanye West has done some very questionable and not so Christ-like things over these past few years. The prime example being getting his girlfriend pregnant while she was still MARRIED!! So, I hope that he is serious about getting his life right.
If you say you're going to do something for God or turn your life around then you need to follow through. I hope he wasn't just saying all that stuff to just say it. I think it would be great if he could be a role model for North on how we as Christians need to carry ourselves. I know Kanye made that song 'Jesus Walks' but we all know that song is not a gospel track. I never took him to be a person to be serious about religion, but he talked a good while about Jesus on Kris' show. I guess time will tell.
4-Disney: Moo is all about anything related to the Disney princesses. It's no surprise that Princess Jasmine and Princess Tiana are her favorites. They do look the most like her after all. The problem is that Princess Jasmine and Princess Tiana don't appear to be favorites of Disney. And Moo has been noticing that. We have a Disney princess storybook and Tiana only has one story while the other princesses have at least three.
We got her the Princess Pet app on the iPad and guess which princesses didn't have pets? Tiana and Jasmine. Spotted a Disney princesses backpack in Walmart and guess what? Tiana and Jasmine were missing again. What good does it do to add diversity when you're not going to include the diversity in all of your products? I just feel like Disney could do a better job and incorporating Jasmine and Tiana into more of their Disney Princesses merchandise.
Girls of color need to see characters that look like them. And it's not just Disney who could improve on this. How many books have or backpacks have you seen with Barbie's African American friend, Nikki? I have seen none. Zip. Zero. We're living in a melting pot. It's time for these companies to quit their separate but equal ways behind them.
This weekend we had the pleasure of attending a private screening for the new Disney movie Secret of the Wings. Earlier this year my baby sister got Moo completely hooked on all things Tinkerbell and fairies. So, it was no surprise that every time the commercial for Secret of the Wings came on, she would ask me a gazillion times "can we go see that?" She had started to sound a skipping cd.
Anyways, when I got the invite, I knew she was going to be beyond stoked. I have to admit that I have never been a huge fan of Tinkerbell. However, this is Disney's best fairies movie yet. I found myself really watching the movie and not just staring at the screen.
Secret of the Wings is story of love, mystery and adventure that investigates the bonds of sisterhood and friendship. I don't want to give away too many details but this is a must-see family movie. You'll laugh and be on the edge of your seats with the little ones. I highly recommend you pick this up from your nearest Walmart or Target when it comes out on the 23rd of this month.
Sunday was wet and cold. We had gotten a good shower the night before. So, we didn't make it to church. Wet weather seems to make colds come on for the little ones. However, I still got a little word in with my devotions and watching a little Joel Olsteen.
I made some awesome cube beef steaks with rice and brown gravy. All in all, it shaped out to be a pretty good weekend.

After that he was back to not letting anyone touch it. Finally, after about 30 minutes, I thought that it would be a good idea to go ahead and try the potty out. So, we get everything unsnapped, pulled down and I go to sit him on the potty and he flips out! As it turns out, he loves his CARS potty and Lighting McQueen so much that he didn't want to sit on it.
