Happy Friday!  We are another week closer to Christmas.  Naturally, the kids can hardly contain their excitement.  I'm not ashamed to say that they get their love of Christmas from me.  I'm a holiday baby.  So the love of Christmas is in my blood.

Anyways, they've been asking Alexa almost everyday how many days we have until Christmas. It's so cute to watch.  Their joy and excitement is so infectious and just what I need right now.

Friday Five Recently | Week 7

How is it back-to-school time already?  We've been rocking and rolling with homeschool for about three weeks now and I'm still trying to figure out how Summer Break went by so quickly.  Listen, I'm not the biggest fan of overly structured days, getting up in the morning, and having to cut back on my night owl hours.  In the words of Drake, "I come alive in the nighttime." So needless to say it's been an adjustment around these parts.  Anyways, I hope that the 2019-2020 school year has gotten off to a great start for your families.  Here's a look at what we've been up to during my Summer hiatus from the blog.

Recently . . .

Gardened | Our gardening adventures have continued.  I'm so happy the kids and I decided to start growing our own food again. We had a small veggie garden on our balcony when we lived in our old apartment.  So it only made sense to give it another go now that we have a yard with even more space and we can actually plant into the ground.

I will say that it hasn't been all smooth sailing but it's been a great learning and bonding experience for us.  We've enjoyed eating food we grew from seed and via our own hard work.  We recently came back from a trip to my hometown and discovered that our watermelons have finally decided to grow!  We were shocked and excited.  Bambi and his mama had been eating up our watermelon vine and buds every time they bloomed.  I had made up my mind that I was going to take up the vines and plant something else but I'm glad that I didn't.

Realized | While we're on the subject of gardening, I've had the realization/revelation that I've become really passionate about growing my own food.  So much so that I want to give it a go doing it on a larger scale and throw some animals into the mix.  Basically, I want to start a farm.  I'm not shocked by this as I come from a line of sharecroppers and have family members who have/had farms.

I've written about how my mom has an excellent green thumbs and our house was always full of plants growing up.  I've also talked about how I spend time helping my great uncle in his garden and the fun I had shelling peas and shucking corn on his screened-in porch with my siblings.  I just wish I would have realized how passionate I would feel about farming and how right it would feel deep down in my bones before I went to college and studied fashion merchandising.

Now I'm looking into taking some agriculture classes.  Better late than never for sure.

Started | Somewhere between late June and early July, I hopped back on the couponing bandwagon.  Honestly, I'm wondering why I ever stopped to start with.  I'm not out here clearing shelves, but my favorite total at checkout has become $FREE.  I will say that couponing feels so much easier though this time around.

I'm sure that YouTube couponers and my couponing groups has a lot to do with that.  It's easier to find sales and the guesswork is pretty much taken out of doing matchups.  Not only has couponing been a great way to save money, but it's helped me to earn money as well using cashback apps like ibotta, Fetch Rewards, and ShopKick.  I'll go in-depth on this in a later post.

Mourned | This summer has not been kind to my family as a whole.  A little over a month ago my Aunt G passed away.  While wasn't out of the blue because she had been sick and was in and out of the hospital which ended in her having to have her leg amputated, it's still an adjustment.  The first two weeks after her funeral were the hardest for me.  Memories of her kept popping into my head at will and I'd have rush off to the bathroom to cry in peace.

Aunt G is on the right in the hat.

One of my cousins passed away the same day after he heard about her passing.  He was on his way back home to attend the funeral.  I'm not going to go into all of the other people from our family who've passed away this Summer but it's just been a reminder that my aunts, uncles, great cousins, etc. are all older now.  So I know death is to be expected in some cases, but it damn sure ain't welcomed!

Resonated | I stumbled across this post that talks about how we should Stop Accepting Apologies That Aren't Accompanied By Changed Behavior and it really resonated with me.  I think a lot of us struggle with putting our foots down, cutting people off, and leaving harmful situations be it romantic, platonic, and/or professional relationships.  We allow people to continue to mistreat us, disrespect us, and waste our time.  We stay mad for a little while, they give us an apology and empty promises, and we bury our emotions and open our arms and hearts right back up to them time and time again.

I don't want to get too deep or sound too preachy, but accepting apologies without changed behavior is something that's heavily promoted in Black families.  Maybe not as much in this generation but enough that we still need to work on it.  I'm sure many of us have been told to accept so and so's apology for the millionth time because "we're family."  I know I've heard this, both directed and not directed at me, more times than I care to recount.

It took me a long time to realize that a lot of people let others continue to hurt them out of fear.  Fear of being alone, fear of not what's next, fear of losing something/someone familiar and not wanting to have to start over or move on.  Reading this helped to me to come to terms with the fact that I want to break this cycle with my kids.  Also, I want to be conscious of what I'm teaching them about forgiveness.  I want them to know that it's okay to not forgive immediately.

Some wounds won't heal overnight or ever.  Take your time. Also, I want them to know that forgiving someone doesn't mean you have to keep them around and give them the opportunity to screw you over again.  I want my kids to know their worth and what they are worthy of.  I want them to be ruthless about cultivating an environment that is safe and healthy mentally, emotionally, and physically.

Let's chat in the comments!  Have your kids started school yet?  If so, how's it been going?

Friday Five Recently | Week 6

It's a rainy Friday in the Carolinas but I'm not complaining.  This rain is greatly appreciated because we need it.  Our yard has been looking like a dry cracked desert for weeks.  We're supposed to get more rain throughout the weekend.  So we'll be hanging out indoors for the most part.  In the meanwhile though, let's catch up friends!

Friday Five Recently | Week 5

TGIF!!  Y'all have no idea how happy I am that it's finally Friday.  And it's no just any Friday either.  Nope, today is the Friday before Spring Break.  Which means starting this weekend, I get sleep-in for the next 11 days!!  Won't He do it?!

So since it's Friday, that mean it's time for another catch up session.  Also, this post does contain affiliate links.  So if you click on the link and purchase something, I could potentially receive a commission.

Hello February! The month of my people aka Black History Month is officially here! I'm looking forward to continuing to celebrate my culture with my family.

Friday Five Recently | Week 3

Happy Friday and hello November!  Am I the only one kind of happy 2018 is coming to a close?  This year has been rocky at best for me and my family.  I'm looking forward and hoping 2019 will be a better year all around.

Anyways, since it's been a while since I've blogged, a catchup session is in order.  I've missed y'all dearly.  Hopefully, you've missed my face (and words) around these parts as well.

Friday Five Recently | Week 2

Hello August!  How is it time for school to start back already?  We still have another week before we start back with our virtual homeschool.  However, I was scrolling through my Facebook feed the other day and saw that some of my friends' kids started back last week and earlier this week.

Since I'm still recovering from July (more on that below), I'm so thankful that I have another seven days to rest up.  Here's to hoping I finish getting everything organized next week.  Anyways, since I've been on a hiatus let's play catch up!

Friday Five Recently | Week 1

Happy Friday!  Who's ready for the weekend?  Or does every day feel like the weekend since it's Summer Break? 🤔

I'm still trying to figure this one out.  Anyways, I feel like this week was long, but not in a bad way.  With the first month of Summer Break coming to a close, I'm not complaining about time passing by slowly.  There is NO rush to start back up with school just yet.

Wow, it's hard to believe that fall is already coming to close.  The first day of winter is Thursday, y'all.  I'm not even going to lie, I'm excited that winter is about to here.  We've had snow clouds for weeks without any snow and I'm hoping that the snow has just been holding for winter to get here officially.   Anyways, the kids and I have been busy with homeschool and exploring our new neighborhood.  Here's a little bit of what we were up to this fall.

Recently | October Wrap-Up

How is it already November?  Do we really have less than 60 days until 2018 rolls in?  I hate to sound cliche but y'all this year flew by so fast.  And moving didn't help.  If anything, I think that moving in the middle of the year made time fly by a lot faster.  Since we're just getting started with remodeling, I'm preparing myself for the first half of 2018 to go by in a blur as well.

Hello, Autumn and so long summer!  I still can't believe that our summer break is already over.  We're already into the flow of homeschooling and everything is going well.  I'll be posting more about that later as well as uploading some video to the YUMMommy YouTube channel.  What I will say for now is that kids are actually excited about this school year.

And surprisingly I enjoyed my summer break from the blog.  It gave me chance to finish getting us settled and unpacked into our new place, explore a little bit and just have uninterrupted family time.  But I missed you guys and am happy to be back in the saddle and sharing things here again.  So it's only right that I bring you guys up to speed about some of the stuff we did over summer break, right?

Recently | November Edition

Happy November y'all!  2016 is coming to a close in give or take 60 days.  As usual, I feel like this year went by way too fast, but I won't complain about it.  This year been full of changes for me and my family that I know will lead to bigger and better things in the upcoming New Year.  Since I haven't been updating you guys on all of the happenings around these parts very often, I thought a Recently post was in order to bring y'all up to speed.

Started | I've been keeping a secret from you guys.  For almost two years I've been having a strong desire to officially become a member of the BookTube aka YouTube for book lovers/nerds (like me) community.  I thought I was going to start my BookTube journey last year, but chickened out.  Also, I chickened out earlier this year.  It just felt like some sort of elite club that I might not be cool enough to be a part of.

Anyways, this year I've really been working on getting more comfortable being in front of the camera and shooting videos.  So last month I decided that enough was enough.  I took the plunge and became a BookTuber!  You check out my first video below

So far everything has been great.  My channel is still fairly new but already I've made some new friends and even gotten my first BookTube shout out from another more known and established BookTuber, Olivia from iLivieforbooks.  I'm super excited to have a dedicated space to fangirl over my favorite books and authors as well as to talk about writing.

Loved | Last month I was cleaning out the kids' iPad and realized that I'm raising a future model and a mini photographer/videographer.  Can who's going to be which?  Maybe the pictures below will give y'all a clue.

I absolutely loved this pictures of Moo with her personality really shining through.  I'm pretty sure I shared them with all of my family members as well as on my Instagram and the YUMMommy Facebook page.  They were just too adorable not to share.  This wasn't her only photoshoot either.  Not to be outdone JJ snapped these pretty decent shots of his bff Thomas the Tank Engine and Luke.

Celebrated | For the last three years it has rained on Halloween here.  We purchased costumes for the kids the first two years, but skipped buying them the third year.  We were only going to be home chilling on the couch with our favorite snacks and watching our favorite Halloween movies anyway.  Fast forward to Halloween 2016 and we skip costumes again because I'm expecting our tradition of Halloween Rain to continue.  Guess what y'all?

It didn't rain this year!  The kids asked to go trunk-or-treating at our favorite baptist church and I obliged them.  Although we didn't have official costumes (Moo found a Doc McStuffins dress up shirt and JJ wore a 'Zombie Ate My Homework' shirt), we still had a blast celebrating Halloween with some friends from our old neighborhood.  The kids got to play games like pin the nose on the pumpkin, JJ took his first hay ride and we got to get inside a real fire truck!  Next year we'll be back to buying costumes.

Last month we also celebrated the fact that Moo has pretty much tested out of her grade level according to the standardized testing they took at the beginning of the school year as well as the gifted and talented test.  The testing only allowed for second graders to test to a fourth grade level.  Moo maxed out in the reading department and did pretty much the same in the math.  She's already exceeded her end of the year goals for both.

She had been mentioning being a little bored in classroom, but I thought that she was only saying that because she wanted to homeschool with her brother.  I'm glad we have test results to prove that she's actually bored because she's so far ahead of her classmates.  Her teacher has recommended some apps and learning sites for us to use at home so that she can be more stimulated on her intellectual level.

Watched | Let me just off saying that I've pretty given up watching cable tv.  Between the horrible campaign ads and just not being able to find anything to keep my attention, I've spent a lot of time on Netflix these past few months.  I was beyond hyped when I found Marvel was filming Luke Cage and stalked Netflix for it daily just in case they released it early.  When they finally did, I binge watched it and y'all that show did NOT disappoint.  I'm already wondering when season 2 will start filming.

I finally watched the last episode of Orange Is The New Black.  I know I'm super late, but I had been putting it off because with everything going on in our society, the race issues and inequality issues were just hitting too close to home and I needed a moment to not get swept up even more in my frustration and anger.  Needless to say I cried some angry tears and a few tears of sorrow.

So I've become a bit obsessed British and foreign crime shows.  The Fall, featuring Gillian Anderson and Jamie Dornan, is my favorite and it felt like it took them forever to release the third and final season on Netflix.  I was not prepared for the way it ended.  Also, I binge watched Marcella, another British crime show, that really had me on the edge of my seat.  I don't know how to talk about these shows without spoiling it so I'll say just check them out, but be aware that they are a bit graphic and dark.

Disliked |  There's no easy way to put this.  So I'm just going to come right out and say it.  For the past few months I have really disliked having neighbors.  A few specific neighbors to be exact.  I don't want to go into details, but let's just say that we you have share parking spaces, a lawn and other property, please considerate, clean and respectful.

The kids and I are looking forward to moving to the country where we can have our space.  Will we miss the convenience of city life?  Of course, having Target two miles away is hard to give up, but my sanity and detached living are more important.  I'm looking forward to the New Year when our closest neighbor will be several yards away.

What have you guys been up to?

Recently June: What I'm Anticipating, Celebrating, Marveling,Planning & Creating

Who wants to play a game of Catch Up?  Now that I'm officially back from my blogging hiatus, I thought a Recently post would be the best way to get y'all up to speed with what's been going with the YUMMommy family.  Also, let me know if you're loving the new blog layout.  This was the layout I wanted from the started, but couldn't seem to find one with that allowed me to have the level of customization that I wanted until I checked out Creative Market.  If you're looking for blog templates, graphics, fonts, etc definitely check them out.  Lots of vendors and great quality products.

Anticipating

Summer Break has been on my mind since Christmas!  Don't get me wrong, I love that this school year has been a great one for Moo compared to last year.  She's made awesome friends and had a great teacher.  However, I've been anticipating the days when I can sleep in, the nights we can stay up late watching movies other than Fridays and Saturdays and being able to do more activities as a family.  Summer we ready!

Celebrating

My little guy turned five last month!  I'm still trying to wrap my head around it all.  Life should come with a slow motion button.  I was looking at pictures of him from last year and reflecting on all the ways he's grown.  Motherhood is bittersweet y'all.  On one hand I'm so proud of how independent the kids are getting, but on the other hand there's this fear and sadness I have as they get closer and closer to leaving the nest.

Marveling

If you follow me on Instagram you know that we're growing a balcony garden.  I've always believed that growing things is just something that in my blood.  My mom has quite the green thumb.  She's had houseplants since I can remember- ferns, African violets, peace lilies, etc.  She even managed to grow a patch of gourds and a sunflower one summer without even trying to.

My siblings and I used to help out our great-uncle in his garden when I was in middle school.  During the summer we'd weed and water his small veggie garden.  Then in the early fall we'd shell peas and shuck corn on his front porch while my mom cut up greens.  My grandparents were sharecroppers.  I've listened many days as my mom and her sisters told story about their lives growing up on their farm.

I said all that to say that I love our garden and how growing it has helped me to feel more connected to my roots.  I love how it's provided another avenue for us to bond as a family and a way to teach Moo and JJ the value of caring for something as well as putting in hard work and effort.

Planning

I don't want to spend all summer sleeping in.  Summers are meant for adventures.  For the last few weeks I've been working on our Summer Bucket List that I'll be posting next week.  We're planning on making some great memories this summer.  Here's to lots of laughs, adventures and fun times.

Creating

My creative juices have been flowing.  I'm taking advantage of this and finishing up my novels.  I have two wonderful writing partners/accountability partners.  It feels good to be putting pen to paper and letting my characters lead me again.

I've also pulled my crochet hooks back out.  The middle panel of Moo's Eiffel Tower Paris blanket is almost done.  I'm probably more excited about this than she is because this is my first time crocheting a graphghan blanket.  Plus I designed the pattern myself.  Crochet patterns are pretty simple to make.  All you need is PicMonkey, some royalty-free graphics and crochet pattern maker app.

Up next on my graghghan list is a Waddles from Gravity Falls inspired blanket for my sister and an Angry Birds inspired graphghan for JJ.

What have you been up to recently?  Is your family looking forward to Summer Break?

Recently January: What I'm Resolving, Reading, Organizing, Loving & Craving

I can hardly believe that there are less than ten more days left in January!  This month started off with a lot of excitement over our rental life departure countdown.  I'm seriously looking forward to becoming a homeowner in the next few months.  Overall, this month has been pretty good to me and my family.  Already I can't wait to see what February has in store for us.

This month my Recently prompts are once again borrowed from Jenna and Anne from their Currently series.  Also, this post contains one Amazon affiliate link, which just means if you purchase something from Amazon through my link I'll receive a small affiliate commission from them.

Resolving

Every year I like to set goals and resolutions for the New Year.  This year was no different.  You read about what I'm planning and hope to accomplish in 2016 here.  Something I'm resolving to do before this month is out is to sit down with the kids and plan out a 2016 Family Bucket List.  This year I want to focus having more experiences with kids.  Making more memories for all of us to look back on.

Reading

Earlier this month I decided that the kids and I would join the #52BooksIn2016 Challenge after seeing Dani post about it on her Instagram page.  I actually committed to us reading 52-150 books because as a family we read roughly 3 to 4 books a day. Moo has to read one book a day for her homework, JJ has to read one book a day, we read two books at bedtime and then I read my adult books after they're asleep to unwind.  If you're keeping count we read a minimum of 31 books each month and have already read 37 books since January 1st.  I'll be sharing our favorite reads at the end of the month.

Anyways, I started reading The Honest Life by Jessica Alba this past Thursday.  I've been a fan of hers since I saw her in the movie Honey and had been wanting to read this book for the longest time, but just never got around to it.  I put in a request at our local library, picked it up and haven't been able to really put it down since.  If you're interested in living a healthy and honest, but realistic lifestyle this book is for you.  It's full of great information, tips and has a whole resource section.

Organizing

Although we aren't moving for another couple of months, I've been working hard at getting my family organized by purging our rental.  I've been shredding old papers and sorting the important ones into folders, cleaning out the closets and sorting through toys, books and more.  The Goodwill has seen us multiple times this month already.  It feels great to be ridding ourselves of stuff we no longer need and haven't used in ages.  I'm holding off on buying more storage containers until we move because I don't want to buy anything that won't fit properly into its designated space.

Loving

We've been snowed and iced in since Friday morning and I'm loving it!  My love for snow is out of this world.  It's the perfect weather for staying indoors to read and cuddle with my little ones.  We've also been baking cookies and catching up on Netflix movies.  Not sure if schools will be open Monday as they planned because I'm sure that the water from the melting snow is going to refreeze Sunday making the roads too slick for buses.

Unfortunately there have already been 5 deaths in our area due to people driving in this weather.  One of the victims was 5 year old and that news broke my heart even more.  Definitely be safe if you are continuing to venture out and about.

Craving

My baby fever is out of this world y'all!  It seems like everywhere I turn someone I know is either having a baby or has had a baby.  A while back we dropped by a family member's house and I found out they were fostering a baby.  I think I barely said hello everyone before I made a bee line straight for the baby.

She was the cutest little thing.  Y'all I've never had a small baby.  Both Moo and JJ were almost 9 pounds each.  My baby sister kept joking that I should pack up the baby's stuff take her home the whole time I was there.  To be honest I did think about it and would have totally done it.

Now you know what I've been up to.  Don't forget to sign-up for my newsletter!

Recently | December

I can't believe it's been over a year since I've done one of my these posts.  Recently is my version of the Currently series that other bloggers have been taking part in.  With the year coming to a quick close, I thought I'd catch up and share what's been going on over here in the YUMMommy household.  These prompts are courtesy of Jenna from Gold & Bloom.

Wishing

I know I'm always talking about how I wish time would slow down, but I can't wait for 2016 to get here.  Seriously, I'm bursting with excitement.  Why? Remember I mentioned that me and the crew were house hunting?  Well, we said yes to one of the houses we looked at!

And now I'm wishing we could fast forward to the end of our rental lease and be all moved into our new place already.  Y'all don't understand (or maybe some of you do) how much I'm looking forward to leaving this rental/apartment life behind.  This move is going to be a positive in so many ways for us.  The kids will have a yard they can actually play in and I'll have space for a real outdoor garden and private space to shoot pictures and film videos in.

Remembering

Although it's been a few years since Ma died, this holiday season I found myself missing her just as much as I did on my first Christmas without her.  I've been replaying my most favorite memories of spending time with her over and over in my head.  I hope that I always remember those moments so that I can share those stories with my kids one day.

I love you, Ma!  Wish you were here instead of up there.  Nevertheless, I know you're watching over us.  You're in a better place and I shouldn't complain about that, but God knows I miss you like crazy everyday!

Wrapping

Yes, I know that Christmas has come and gone, but I've already gotten a head start on marking off gifts from my list for next Christmas.  I hit up a few after Christmas sales with my Christmas money this weekend.  I've been sneaking and wrapping them up when I can.  And while we're talking about wrapping, does anyone else have an obsession with buying wrapping paper?

My husband does and it drives me nuts.  I appreciate the fact that he wants to make sure we're well-stocked for the holidays, but we have over ten rolls of holiday wrapping paper (affiliate link) floating around.  Our collection is sure to expand next year.  Maybe, I can convince him to invest in gift bags and gift boxes instead.

Baking

Sadly, my oven hasn't been getting much use.  I did bake a ham for Christmas and we did make some salt dough ornaments that required baking, but that's about it.  However, my mom gifted me the cookbook above that is specifically for people with gluten, dairy and other food allergies this Christmas.  You can order your copy here (affiliate link). I'm looking forward to baking several of the desserts I found in there.

Also, why didn't anyone tell me how easy it was to make cheesecake?  I'm not talking about the no-bake box mix either.  Next week, I'm going to be trying my hand at making my first homemade cheesecake for me and the Mr.  I've been on the hunt for soy version that Moo can try.

Decorating

A bigger place means more rooms to decorate and furniture shopping of course.  I've been busy scouting the stores and websites for new furniture.  This whole process of deciding on what pieces to put in our new space is a bit overwhelming.  Not only is furniture expensive, but the variety of styles, colors, and materials are endless.

I've narrowed down themes for the bedrooms including the future nursery and have narrowed down the sofa sets for the den and formal sitting room to three options each.  While the kitchen won't require decorating minus bar stools for the breakfast bar, we have decided to upgrade our mismatched pot set.  I can't wait to share of this process with y'all in the New Year.

Whelp that's it folks.  We haven't been up too much as of late, but it was still nice to catch up with you guys.  I hope everyone had a great holiday and Happy New Year if I don't see you back around these parts before January 1, 2016!  Also, don't forget to take my reader survey and sign-up for my newsletter, The YUMM Lane.
